LONDON, UK – Hundreds of thousands of people demanding another referendum on leaving the European Union have marched in central London.
Frustrated by politicians not being able to negotiate a way forward, the UK is facing the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.
The demonstration on Saturday was called under the banner “Put It To The People.”
The organisers say a million people turned out to record their protest. They carried signs calling for another referendum, and pledging support to Europe. Many carried EU flags.
“The organisers say it was one million-strong, it’s very hard to verify those kinds of claims but this was a very significant march, well into the hundreds of thousands, BBC correspondent Richard Lister said Saturday.
The protest came as the European Council provided Theresa May’s government and the House of Commons at large a little flexibility, in terms of extending the exit date.
Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, fand former attorney general Dominic Grieve were among the speakers at Saturday’s demonstration.
